Danzantes in ZacatecasThe artistic and cultural life of the city of Zacatecas is rich and lively, comparable to that of other cities of the world. One can find vanguard film, classical and popular music concerts, classical and folkloric ballet, poetry readings, literary conferences and competitions, presentations of opera with such stars as Placido Domingo and Pavarotti, modern dance clubs, and an assortment of local street entertainment. Also included are the typical music groups "estudiantinas" and "tamborazos", as well as traditional mariachis, all of which enliven the historic streets of friendly Zacatecas.

While some indigenous influence can be noted, one can almost say that Zacatecas is a city transplanted directly from Spain, so strong is the peninsular influence. Local citizens, such as Federico Sescosse, have worked hard to preserve colonial buildings.

Teatro CalderónSo impressive is the arquitectural beauty of Zacatecas that the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History declared the city several years ago to be a colonial monument, part of the cultural patrimony of all Mexicans.

ZACATECAS continues to be a strategic site in northern Mexico, standing at the crossroads of several important highways. Mining is still the basis for the local economy, although there has been an enormous increase in farming in the region, making ZACATECAS one of the largest growers of corn and beans in Mexico.
